THE ARTIST

I Started Drawing Almost By Accident

Bertus Combrinck South African wildlife artist

Self-Taught. Obsessed With Detail.

I taught myself to draw by studying, experimenting and learning from the work of other artists. Over time, I developed my own approach to creating hyper-realistic graphite and charcoal artwork.

Why Wildlife?

I originally started drawing people (which kind of happened by accident) and that went on for a long time. I did a lot of commission work and still do sometimes, but at one point in 2019 I had this urge to draw something related to my relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ…

This led to me drawing an artwork that I call “Lion of Judah”.
It changed quite a lot about my drawing passions. I fell in love with drawing animals, how to get the realism of the fur, the wild look in their eyes and their character.

Since then, I enjoy drawing animals, specifically African wildlife, and now that I’m working with a lion conservation, I get to draw the king of the jungle, the Lion…

Why Black & White?

There is just something elegant about black & white art. It “feels” different to what you see everyone else do with colour.
It is simple yet elegant, it shows contrast in a in a different light which to me has class.

It also has a level of timelessness to it, like a black and white movie, they are ancient, yet people always go back to watch it again.

And the level of detail that can be achieved with the black and white drawing is just on another level.

A Connection To Conservation

Since my drawing passion changed to animals and lions have become a major part of that, I started working with a lion conservation which mutually benefits both parties.

They provide me with high quality and high-resolution photographs of the lions they rescued, and I give them a commission on every sale I make from the limited edition prints from the drawings of their lions.

Everybody wins!!
